To successfully complete the course, you must attend the entire course, participate in all skill sessions/drills, activities and scenarios, demonstrate competency in all required skills and scenarios, and pass the written exams with a minimum grade of 80 percent. The practice sessions may require some strenuous physical activity. You are encouraged to check with your health care professional before participating in the practice sessions. If a medical condition or disability exists that might prevent participation in the activities, or there are questions about fully participating in the course, please contact us to discuss this before the course begins.
Upon successful completion of the course, you will receive an American Red Cross certificate for Water Safety Instructor valid for 2 years.
The purpose of the Water Safety Instructor Course is to train instructor candidates to teach courses and presentations in the American Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety Program.
Candidates must be 16 years old on or before the last day of the course and must be able to pass the prerequisite skills on the first day of the course*:
• Swim 25 meters of each of the following strokes: front crawl, back crawl, elementary backstroke, breaststroke, and sidestroke; swim 15 meters of butterfly stroke.
• Maintain position on back in deep water for one minute (floating or sculling).
• Tread water for one minute.
• All prerequisites will be completed at the beginning of the course.
The course will begin at the Foster Aquatic Center, rain or shine. If you do not arrive at the disclosed location on time then you will forfeit your spot in the course. In the event of thunder or lightning the pool must close for 30 minutes and the pool deck must be cleared of all personnel. The course will be adjusted accordingly and directions will be given to the course participants at that time. Classroom portions of the course will not be affected by the weather.
Classroom portions of the course will be held in the Aquatics Operations classroom, located on the first floor of building 5677. Please provide your own transportation to and from the Foster Aquatic Center for the duration of the course. In the event that personal transportation is not an option to and from the pool and classroom, the Aquatics Operations program will provide limited seating in the facility vehicle.
Adjustments made to the course schedule due to inclement weather may affect when the course is completed, potentially adding time to the end.
During the class, you will be provided a copy of the American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Manual that must stay at the facility. You can access a digital version of the manuals using the link provided in the registration email sent from the American Red Cross. This email also contains information regarding the prerequisite online portion that must be completed prior to the first day of the course. Please bring a copy of successful online prerequisite completion to the instructors on the first day of the course.
If you would like to withdraw from the course, please contact us immediately. The refund amount will be determined by the following policy:
• 100% refunds will be given to cancellations made prior to the registration deadline.
• 80% refunds will be given to cancellations made after the registration deadline.
• No refunds will be given after the first day of class.
*The precourse session includes an assessment of prerequisite abilities as described earlier. Failure to complete these skills during the precourse session will result in an automatic disenrollment of the class and a 80% refund given to the student. The student may choose to enroll in another upcoming course and pay the full course fee. Students that fail or do not show up to the precourse cannot transfer their course registration fee to another upcoming course.
