Memorandum for Senior Pentagon Leadership   -   Subject: Transportation of Service Animals on DoD owned and Controlled Aircraft

Main points include:

  • Service animals must comply to DoD aircraft or commercial aircraft charted by the DoD or on behalf of the DoD

     

    Requirements:

    1.)    Harness leash or otherwise tether service animals at all times in an air terminal or on an aircraft

    2.)    Restrain service animals from relieving itself while in the air terminal or on the aircrafts, or ensure the service animal relieves itself without posing a health or sanitation issue

    3.)    Provides the departing DoD passenger terminal service with the: service animals handler a. name  b. email addresses c. phone number

    4.)    Service handler name and phone number (if different from the service animal handler’s name and contact)

    5.)    A description of the animals appearance, height and weight

    6.)    Current service animal information to include: a. rabies vaccination date and the date the vaccination expires b. other health issues diseases, or conditions c. veterinarian’s name and phone number d. name and contact information of the service animals’ trainer or the training organization that trained the service animal to do work or perform tasks for the service animal user

    7.)    No later the 48 hours in advance of the date and time of departure, the service animal handler must provide the departing DoD passenger terminal service a signed statement of assurance

    • Travel with no more than two properly trained service animals that must be able to fit in the service animal’s handler’s lap or in the service animal’s handler’s foot space on the DoD aircraft or commercial aircraft charted by the DoD or on behalf of the DoD

    • The traveler is required to pay a pet fee and transport service animals in a pet carrier or pay for damage from service animals that do not meet all of the requirements
